AVOIDING THE "CONSULTATION UPSELL": STAYING IN BUDGET AT SEOUL CLINICS

Korean clinic consultations are well-engineered to expand your spend. Here's the four-pattern playbook foreign visitors get talked into, and how to stay anchored to your plan.

A counsellor at a Korean aesthetic clinic is paid on package size. Here's the four-pattern playbook they use, not because they're bad people, but because the system rewards it, and how to stay anchored to your pre-decided plan.

PATTERN 1: THE BRAND UPGRADE

You came in for botox. The counsellor presents the four-tier brand grid and recommends Allergan ("the version that actually works for foreign patients"). The reality: for routine doses in a healthy patient, Nabota at half the price is clinically indistinguishable. Don't dismiss Allergan if you have a real reason for it (resistance history, high-stakes event); do dismiss it if you came in for routine maintenance.

PATTERN 2: THE DOSE EXPANSION

You said "I want forehead botox." The counsellor recommends "forehead + glabella + crow's feet, they all show together." For some patients this is genuine medical advice; for others it's a 3× cost expansion. Push back: what specifically would I miss if I do forehead only this visit and add the others next time?

"All three areas together" can be either genuine advice or a 3× cost expansion. Ask which.

PATTERN 3: THE PROTOCOL UPGRADE

You said "I want a Rejuran session." The counsellor recommends "the 3-session program upfront so you save 10%." This is genuinely good value if you're committed, but only if you're going to complete all 3 sessions in Seoul. If you're flying home before session 3, the upfront discount becomes a sunk cost. Ask: is there a single-session price, and what's the gap?

PATTERN 4: THE "WHILE YOU'RE HERE" STACK

You came for filler. The counsellor recommends adding Ultherapy "since you're here, the prices are better than your home country, and the lifting works synergistically with the filler." Sometimes true; sometimes not. The discipline: did you research Ultherapy before this visit and decide you wanted it? If no, defer to the next trip.

The counsellor wins the day if you came in with a vague plan. They lose the day if you came in with a specific list.

HOW TO STAY ANCHORED

Three sentences in your phone, ready to read at the start of the consultation:

  • 01"I'm here for [specific procedures], at [brand tier]."
  • 02"My budget for today is [USD amount]."
  • 03"I'd like to compare with [other clinics] before deciding on anything beyond what I came for."

Saying these three things up front realigns the consultation toward your goals instead of the counsellor's upgrade path. Most counsellors are professional and will respect a clearly-stated plan; the few who push past it are showing you their value system.

WHEN TO WALK AWAY

Walk away from a clinic if: the counsellor refuses to honor a quote unless you book today, the recommended plan ignores your stated budget, you feel pressured to add procedures you didn't come for, the doctor didn't personally examine you. None of these are deal-breakers for the procedure category, they're deal-breakers for that specific clinic.

WHEN UPGRADES ARE GENUINELY WORTH IT

Upgrades make sense when: you've had a previous bad reaction to a cheaper brand, the recommended adjustment addresses something the doctor (not the counsellor) flagged on physical exam, the package discount applies to a protocol you were already committed to. The discipline isn't "always say no", it's "always know why you're saying yes."
