THREAD LIFTING IN KOREA: PDO, PCL, MINT, WONDERLIFT COMPARED

Korea is the world's busiest thread-lifting market. Here's what the bewildering catalogue of thread types actually does, how long each lasts, and how to choose for your specific case.

Thread lifting was popularised in Korea long before the West caught on. A typical Seoul aesthetic clinic stocks 6–10 different thread types. Here's how to navigate the menu without ending up over-treated.

HOW THREADS WORK

Bioabsorbable threads are inserted under the skin via fine cannulas. The threads have small barbs or cones that catch the soft tissue when pulled, producing immediate mechanical lift. Over the following 6–12 months the thread material dissolves, but the surrounding tissue has built new collagen along the thread track, so the lift continues even after the thread is gone. Total result duration: 12–24 months from a properly placed thread set.

MATERIAL 1: PDO (POLYDIOXANONE)

The original lifting thread material. PDO threads dissolve in 6–8 months, with collagen build-up extending the lift to ~12–14 months. They're the cheapest thread type and the most commonly used in Korean clinics. Brands: Mint PDO, Aptos PDO, Korea-domestic PDO at ₩200K–250K per area.

PDO is the entry-tier thread, affordable, well-studied, but the shortest-acting.

MATERIAL 2: PCL (POLYCAPROLACTONE)

Newer material. PCL threads dissolve much more slowly, 12–24 months, and produce more aggressive collagen stimulation. Result duration extends to ~18–24 months. Brands: PCL Thread, Wonderlift, Aptos PCL. Korean prices: ₩200K–400K per thread.

PCL is the right material for patients in their 40s and 50s where the underlying tissue support is genuinely failing, you want the longer dissolution profile to give the collagen time to mature. For 30s patients with mild laxity, PCL is overkill and PDO at half the price gives an indistinguishable result.

MATERIAL 3: PLLA (POLY-L-LACTIC ACID), SILHOUETTE SOFT

PLLA threads (Silhouette Soft is the dominant brand) are different beasts. The cone design produces stronger immediate fixation than barbed threads, and PLLA stimulates more aggressive collagen build-up than PDO or PCL. Result duration: 24+ months. Korean price: ₩400K per thread, often paired with PCL or PDO threads in combination protocols.

PDO is the entry. PCL is the middle. PLLA Silhouette Soft is the long-haul choice for serious lifting.

READING THE KOREAN THREAD MENU

Korean thread menus are dense, a typical clinic lists 6+ thread types with prices "per thread" rather than "per session." A meaningful protocol uses 8–16 threads depending on the area, so the menu price is a unit price, not the full session cost. Confirm:

  • 01How many threads are recommended for your specific case (jawline alone usually 6–8; mid-face + jawline 12–16).
  • 02Whether the price is per thread or per pair (some clinics quote pairs since threads are inserted symmetrically).
  • 03Which material is being used, Mint PDO at ₩200K is fundamentally cheaper than Silhouette Soft PLLA at ₩400K.
  • 04What's included: anaesthesia, post-op tape, 1-week follow-up, these can add 10–20% to the headline price.
  • 05Combination discounts when stacked with HIFU or filler in the same session.

WHO THREADS ARE FOR

Threads work best for patients aged 35–55 with early-to-moderate lower-face descent. They're NOT a substitute for surgery in cases of significant excess skin or severe jowling, and they're NOT a magic anti-aging treatment for 25-year-olds. The best thread candidate has good skin quality and mild structural laxity, the threads physically lift, the collagen builds, the result holds.
