ULTHERAPY VS THERMAGE VS SOFWAVE, PICKING YOUR LIFTING MODALITY IN SEOUL

Three flagship non-surgical lifting devices, three different physics, three different best-fit cases. A practical comparison of which to book at a Seoul clinic in 2026.

When a Seoul clinic offers "lifting", they're usually pitching one of three devices. They look interchangeable on the menu and they all say "lifting" in big letters, but the physics, the depth they reach, and the case they're best for are genuinely different.

ULTHERAPY / ULTHERAPY PRIME, THE SMAS SPECIALIST

Focused ultrasound at three precise depths, 1.5 mm, 3 mm, and 4.5 mm. The 4.5 mm depth reaches the SMAS layer (the same fascial layer surgical face-lifts tighten). Best in cases where the underlying support is failing: jowling, mid-cheek descent, neck laxity. Korean event price for 100 shots: ₩390K–900K. Full face usually starts at the 300-shot tier.

Strengths: deepest reach, most-studied for deep tissue tightening, single-session protocol. Weaknesses: more painful than the other two, requires experienced operator to avoid over-treatment, results take 12 weeks to mature.

Ultherapy depth profile, 1.5mm, 3mm, 4.5mm SMAS reach
Ultherapy is the only device on this list that reaches the SMAS, the surgical face-lift layer.

THERMAGE FLX, THE BULK-TIGHTENING TOOL

Monopolar radiofrequency. Heats a broad volume of dermis (the layer that holds collagen and elastin), bulk-shrinking it. Better for diffuse skin laxity, a soft, less-defined whole-face look, and for the under-eye area where Ultherapy can't safely reach. 600 shots ≈ full face; 900 shots ≈ full face + neck. Premium price tier: typically ₩1.9M–2.5M per session.

Strengths: even, predictable surface tightening; safe for under-eye and chest; tolerable pain profile. Weaknesses: doesn't lift deep structure, results plateau faster than Ultherapy, expensive.

SOFWAVE, THE IN-BETWEEN OPTION

A newer 7-beam ultrasound at a fixed 1.5 mm depth. Sits between Ultherapy (deeper) and Thermage (broader, mid-dermis), with shorter discomfort and faster sessions. Good for early-stage laxity in 30s/early-40s patients. Korean pricing settles around ₩900K–1.0M.

Strengths: minimal discomfort, no SMAS-depth precision required, good for early laxity. Weaknesses: too shallow for advanced sagging, fewer long-term studies than the other two.

Ultherapy lifts the foundation. Thermage tightens the wallpaper. Sofwave sands the trim.

PICKING BETWEEN THEM

  • 01Heavy lower-face descent / jowling → Ultherapy Prime, 300+ shots.
  • 02Diffuse crepiness, especially under the eyes → Thermage FLX or Eye Thermage.
  • 03Early laxity, want minimal downtime → Sofwave, or budget Korean HIFU (Shurink Universe).
  • 04On a tight budget → Shurink Universe (Korean-made HIFU, ~₩70K–150K) gets you 70% of the result for 20% of the cost.
  • 05Already had one, combine. Ultherapy at 12-month intervals + Sofwave or Thermage in the off year is a popular Korean maintenance pattern.

Many Korean clinics layer two modalities, e.g. Ultherapy + Sofwave at 6-month intervals.

COMBINATION PROTOCOLS

Korean clinics frequently combine these devices in layered protocols rather than treating them as either-or. A common premium plan: Ultherapy Prime in month 1 (deep SMAS reset), Thermage FLX in month 6 (surface tightening), Sofwave in month 12 (touch-up). Spread over a year, the result is more dramatic than any single device, and the per-treatment cost is amortised over time.
