SEOUL AESTHETIC CLINIC PREP: YOUR 7-DAY PRE-TREATMENT CHECKLIST

What to stop, pack, and confirm in the week before your Seoul clinic appointment.

Seoul clinics move fast. A consultation and treatment can happen in the same two-hour block, which is one reason so many medical tourists book here. But that speed works against you if you show up having used the wrong skincare three days earlier, or with blood thinners still active in your system. A small amount of prep at home changes what's possible when you arrive.

STOP THESE SKINCARE ACTIVES 7 DAYS BEFORE

Retinol, tretinoin, and retinoid derivatives thin and sensitize the skin barrier. Any injectable or laser treatment on retinized skin bruises more easily and heals more slowly. Stop all retinoid products, including low-strength over-the-counter retinol serums, at least seven days before your appointment. Most Gangnam clinics will ask at intake whether you use tretinoin, and some will reschedule you if you admit to using it in the last 48 hours.

AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic) and BHAs (salicylic acid) weaken the skin barrier at the surface. Stop these five to seven days out for any laser or RF treatment, and three to five days out for injectables. Vitamin C serums are generally fine to continue, but drop them for the 48 hours immediately before any laser session since they can increase photosensitivity. Niacinamide and hyaluronic acid are safe to keep using right up to the appointment day.

Exfoliating acids, physical scrubs, and dermaplaning should all stop seven days before. Arriving with compromised skin is the single fastest way to get turned away at the door. Clinics in Apgujeong and Cheongdam tend to run thorough skin assessments before any procedure, and a compromised barrier will push your timeline back by at least a week.

MEDICATIONS AND SUPPLEMENTS TO PAUSE

Blood-thinning medications significantly increase bruising risk for injectables and thread procedures. If you're on prescription anticoagulants like warfarin or clopidogrel, do not stop without consulting your prescribing doctor first. Over-the-counter NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen) are different: pause these five to seven days before any filler or botox appointment. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is fine to take instead if you need pain relief during the prep period.

  • 01Fish oil and omega-3 supplements: stop 7 days before (blood-thinning effect)
  • 02Vitamin E in high doses (>400 IU): stop 7 days before
  • 03Ginkgo biloba, ginseng, garlic supplements: stop 5-7 days before
  • 04Ibuprofen and aspirin: stop 5-7 days before injectables
  • 05Alcohol: stop 48 hours before any injectable or laser treatment
  • 06Prescription retinoids (Retin-A, Differin): stop 7 days before
  • 07Immunosuppressants and steroid creams on the treatment area: discuss with your doctor

WHAT TO CONFIRM BEFORE YOU FLY

If you booked your clinic appointment from abroad, confirm the appointment 48 hours before your flight, not just at the time of initial booking. Korean clinic schedules shift, and a slot that was confirmed three weeks ago may have moved. Request a reconfirmation via KakaoTalk or WhatsApp, both of which most Gangnam clinics support for international patients. Get the confirmation in writing with the appointment time in KST (Korea Standard Time, UTC+9) spelled out explicitly.

Check what the clinic requires you to arrive without. Most clinics in Sinnonhyeon and Cheongdam ask patients to come in with clean, bare skin for any facial treatment: no foundation, no sunscreen, no tinted moisturizer. Some also ask that you avoid caffeine on the day of a laser session to minimize skin reactivity. If English support is limited at your chosen clinic, ask whether a coordinator or translator will be present for your consultation. The difference between a same-day treatment and a rescheduled one often comes down to what you cleared up in that pre-flight check.

THE DAY BEFORE: THREE RULES THAT ACTUALLY MATTER

Sleep. Fatigue increases cortisol, and elevated cortisol affects how skin responds to both injectables and energy-based treatments. A full night's sleep before dermal filler or HIFU is not just a wellness suggestion: it measurably affects bruising duration and post-treatment redness. Clinics in Apgujeong will sometimes comment on undereye circles during intake because they indicate systemic stress, which matters for treatments like Rejuran that depend on the body's healing response.

Cut alcohol 48 hours out, not just the night before. Alcohol dilates blood vessels and stays active in the system longer than most people assume. It also increases bruising risk at injection sites by 30-40% compared to sober patients, based on clinical observations shared by practitioners at several major Gangnam clinics. On the morning of your appointment, drink water and eat a normal meal. Arriving fasted is not required for aesthetic treatments and can make you lightheaded during or after injectables.

WHAT TO PACK FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT

Korean clinics work efficiently, and the intake process at most Gangnam and Apgujeong clinics takes 10-15 minutes. Having the right things with you prevents delays and makes that window smoother.

  • 01Passport (required for foreigner registration at most clinics)
  • 02Printed or screenshot confirmation of your appointment with date/time in KST
  • 03List of current medications, supplements, and any known allergies
  • 04Before photos from home if you want to show target areas or previous work
  • 05A card for payment in KRW, or cash (many clinics offer a 5-10% cash discount)
  • 06Sunscreen and a hat for after, especially post-laser
  • 07Comfortable clothing that doesn't require pulling over your face (button-fronts are ideal)

WHAT TO TELL THE DOCTOR IN YOUR CONSULTATION

Korean doctors move through consultations quickly. Be specific and direct: name the area you want treated, describe the result you're after in plain terms (tighter, smoother, less hollow, more defined), and mention any previous treatments you've had in that area including fillers, toxins, threads, or energy devices. Previous Ultherapy or RF work in the last 6-12 months matters for dosing decisions. Previous filler in the nasolabial fold or lips affects what's safe to inject and where.

Tell the doctor or coordinator about medications even if you've already paused them. Some drugs clear the system slowly, and a week's pause does not always mean zero residual effect. Mention any history of cold sores if you're considering lip filler, since the pressure of injection can trigger an outbreak in people with dormant HSV-1. This information changes the protocol: most clinics stock antiviral prophylaxis and will prescribe it before the appointment if you flag the risk.
